“High Court Directive Sparks Action: All-India Street Vendors’ Trust Gears Up for Key Meeting on Street Vendor Licenses”
The All-India Street Vendors’ Public and Charitable Trust has called for a crucial meeting scheduled for 12:30 pm on February 4th at Jayanagar Shopping Complex, 4th Block, Bengaluru. This gathering aims to deliberate on the subsequent actions following a recent high court directive instructing authorities to process applications from trust members seeking street vendor licenses.
The high court, in response to a petition filed by the trust, issued the directive on January 25th. Trust members are now required to submit their applications to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike’s town vending committee within four weeks. The committee, in accordance with the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014, is mandated to assess these applications under sections 5 and 6 of the Act.
Justice M Nagaprasanna, in his order, stipulated that until the town vending committee reaches decisions on the applications, the police should refrain from causing hindrance or disturbance to the vending business of the petitioner-trust members, unless in compliance with the law.
Addressing the matter, trust president Mohammed Javed highlighted the enduring presence of street vendors associated with the trust at Jayanagar Shopping Complex for over 30 years. He pointed out that in November, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) conducted an eviction drive against them, and the issue persists. Javed earnestly urged officials to adhere to the court order, emphasizing the need to prevent any inconvenience to the vendors during this process.
