SAFETY DOESN’T COME REGISTERED FOR MANY GIRLS IN VASANTH NAGAR

Report By Noor Zahira | Mount Carmel College Student Bengaluru | Last Updated at May 02 2019

If you have to be searching for a Paying Guest(PG) accomodation in Vasanthanagar or
any area where PGs are abundant , the chances are such that you will not spot any, since there are no sign boards or posters put up to indicate.

However, when you go browsing through lanes and crosses, you will be surprised with the figures of PGs available in the locality.

Most of them are houses, flats and proper building that are converted to PGs and are monitored without any authority and aren’t
even registered with BBMP.

Surprisingly, the BBMP is trying to keep tracks and records of these PGs so that they can earn revenue from them, the devoir of responsibility and safety lies with the police, they say.

As the blame game continues, working women and students in the city suffer, with no
assurance of safe and affordable accommodation.

There are more than 8000 PGs in Bangalore out of which only 630 are registered and
pay taxes says BBMP. Last year in november the BBMP council also released an order
which stated that every PG must be registered and must obtain a trade license after
which they have to pay the corporate taxes.

Most owners say that they don’t register with civic bodies since they’ll have to pay taxes
because they provide stay for girls at a cheap and affordable rates and registering would
just increase the price of per head living thereby reducing the number of clients they
get.

Many girls are skeptical of choosing PGs and prefer living in hostels because most of
them lack security measures like the visits of strangers ,basic food and stay hygiene, peace and even theft. Most of them want an oasis of serenity amidst the bustling city
which they often don’t get.

One of the girl even complained that many girls kept falling ill due to the dead insects, fungus and worms in the water supplying tanks and pipes.

She also said that her owner
was involved and practiced black magic and witchcraft.

She is an Ex- Resident of Sri
Vinayaka Krupa PG of 7th Cross Vasanthanagar where the owner Suma used to torture girls and extort huge sum of security deposits from girls after which she used to
forcefully evict them in a couple of months.

Many PGs like Sri Vinayaka Krupa collect huge deposits in the name of security deposits
from girls and don’t even give them proper security.

There aren’t enough measures to keep logs of the girls whereabouts and the different kinds of sneak-outs that happen.

Some PGs are so negligent that they don’t even conduct routine checks to monitor
alcohol and drug abuse in the rooms.

The Police and different BBMP officials have told that they will conduct a survey to
check the number of PGs operating unlawfully and will lay down rules and regulation
guidelines to operate.

This they feel would help in addressing concerns around safety of
womens in PGs in Bangalore.

The Ancient Times
Because we’re journalists, we’re impatient. We want to gather the news as quickly as possible, using any technological resource available. And when we’re as sure of the story as we can be, we want to share it immediately, in whatever way reaches the most people. The Internet didn’t plant these ideas in our heads. We’ve always been this way.

  1. the truth is a little harsh, this is a sad state of the country too where the safety doesn’t come guaranteed.

  2. this journalist deserves a hats-off for revealing the hidden facts about the fancy lies of PG

  3. this is a pro level writing for a student, the writing and article is beautifully executed.
