PM Modi calls for Janta Curfew, urges people to stay indoors

NEW DELHI : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday made a fervent appeal to all Indians to stay indoors as much as possible to avoid getting infected by coronavirus, saying the world has never seen a danger as grave as this.

He called for ‘Janta curfew’ on March 22 from 7 am-9 pm, saying no citizen, barring those in essential services, should get out of house.

PM Modi requested people above the age of 60 to not venture out of their homes for the next few weeks.

“Even World War I and II did not affect as many countries as coronavirus has done,” Modi said in a national broadcast.

Asking people to sacrifice “some weeks of yours, some time of yours”, Modi said given that coronavirus has no cure yet, the only way to stay safe is to stay indoors.

“I request all people in country to get out of house only when it is extremely necessary, try and do all work from home,” he said.

The prime minister appealed the citizens not to go into panic buying to store essential commodities as his government has taken steps to ensure that citizens should not face shortage of any essential commodities.

He said resolution and restraint is very important in combat against this global epidemic and urged the citizens to follow the advisories issues by state and central governments to fight coronavirus. He said restrain is compulsory to protect ourselves and remain healthy.

PM Modi said his government has decided to constitute COVID-19 Economic Response Task Force under finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The task force will remain in regular touch with all stakeholders, take their feedback and make decisions accordingly, the PM added.

The prime minister requested the countrymen to avoid visiting hospitals for routine check ups. He said if you have appointment for any non-essential surgery, please postpone for one month, keeping in mind that pressure should not come on hospitals.

Modi said for last 2 months, millions are working day and night in hospitals, airports to serve others by not taking care of themselves. He urged the citizens to stand on their doorways, balconies at 5’o clock on 22 March and keep clapping hands, ringing the bells for 5 mins to salute and encourage them.
