Late Night Counter Insurgency Operations Ends in Srinagar: Son of Hurriyat Leader Killed, Jawan and 2 Cops Injured

Junaid Sehrai, the son of Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai – chairman of Kashmir’s resistance group “Tehreek-e-Hurriyat” was killed in an encounter in Kashmir today.
Two Hizb-ul Mujahideen (HM) militants, including Junaid Sehrai the son of a Hurriyat leader, was killed in a gun battle which broke out midnight of May 18 in Srinagar, Kashmir.

Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar, in a statement, said the encounter, a joint operation between the J&K police and CRPF, took place in Downtown’s Nawakadal area. He said two personnel of CRPF and one policeman of the Special Operation Group (SOG) were injured.
“Police and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in the Kanimazar area in Nawakadal, late last night. As the joint team approached towards the suspected house, the hiding militants fired upon them,” the IG said.
However, the operation was suspended due to the darkness of the night. It resumed this morning and reached peak during the day. Police recovered two AK-47 rifles, other arms and ammunition from the slain militants.
Meanwhile, the administration has suspended voice calling and mobile internet services in Srinagar district as a precautionary measure. This is the third mobile internet suspension in the month of May following the Handwara and Awantipora counter insurgency operations.
