Israel Adesanya to fight Kelvin Gastelum for the UFC Interim Middleweight Championship

Kelvin Gastelum vs Israel Adesanya at UFC 236.

A report in the ESPN has claimed that Dana White has confirmed that top middleweight contenders Israel Adesanya and Kelvin Gastelum will fight for the interim title.

The UFC 234 was supposed to have a middleweight championship bout between Robert Whittaker and Kelvin Gastelum. But at the last moment, Whittaker was hospitalized with an abdominal hernia and underwent emergency surgery, which led to the bout to be cancelled just hours before the event. The fight between Israel Adesanya and Anderson Silva was bumped to the main event spot. Adesanya was declared the winner of the match through unanimous decision as he continued his unbeaten run in MMA.

So with Whittaker still recovering from an abdominal hernia, UFC has booked an interim championship match between number 4 contender Kelvin Gastelum and 5th ranked Israel Adesanya for UFC 236. The venue for the Pay-Per-View (PPV) is yet to be determined but it is scheduled to take place on April 13.

It would be disappointing for Gastelum (15-3) as he was supposed to fight for the undisputed title this month but now he has to face an undefeated prospect in Adesanya (16-0) for the interim 185-pound title. It will be an amazing track of events for the Nigerian who is 5-0 in the UFC since making his debut 12 months ago.

However, Whittaker’s management has said that they are hopeful for the champion to return anytime during the summer. Even UFC President Dana White was hopeful that Whittaker would be able to return to action sooner rather than later.

“Hopefully this thing is only going to be four to six weeks, according to the doctors,” said White.

”He’s in great shape and let’s see how long it takes him to recover from this, and we’ll make something as fast as we can.”

Adesanya has quickly become one of the most talked about fighters in the whole of UFC. He joined the organization at UFC 221 in February 2018 and went on to fight 5 five times in a short period. He brutalized Derek Brunson in November to gain the Anderson Silva fight. Out of those five fights, Adesanya has pocketed fight-night bonus awards in four of those outings.

Because we’re journalists, we’re impatient. We want to gather the news as quickly as possible, using any technological resource available. And when we’re as sure of the story as we can be, we want to share it immediately, in whatever way reaches the most people. The Internet didn’t plant these ideas in our heads. We’ve always been this way.
