The Congress leader first appeared for questioning on Friday after he was summoned by the ED to appear before it in connection with a money laundering case.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials on Tuesday arrested senior Congress leader and former Karnataka Minister DK Shivakumar in Delhi in connection with a money laundering case after prolonged questioning which began on Friday.
The ED probe follows Income Tax raids on the former Minister in 2017 and detection and recovery of unaccounted wealth. The ED later stepped in after the IT department came across instances of alleged money laundering.
The ED officials began questioning him on Friday and turned down a request from him to permit him to travel to Bengaluru on Monday to perform some rituals for the departed elders of the family. He had to stay back in Delhi, and was subjected to questioning on Monday and Tuesday as well. The ED will produce him before a court in Delhi and seek his custody for further interrogation.
Shivakumar, in a tweet, took potshots at the BJP “for finally being successful in their mission of arresting me. The IT and ED cases against me are politically motivated and I am a victim of BJP’s politics of vengeance and vendetta,” he said, and added that he had full faith in “God & in our country’s Judiciary and am very confident that I will emerge victorious both legally and politically against this vendetta politics.”
AICC general secretary in charge of Karnataka affairs, KC Venugopal described the arrest as a “clear case of political vendetta by the fascist government at the centre. After Shri.Chidambaram, yet another leader facing vengeance for standing up against the horse trading and petty politics of the @BJP4India,” he tweeted.
Former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, in whose Cabinet Shivakumar was a minister, slammed the ED action. “After days of interrogation, without allowing even a day’s break for the festival, ED now cites non-cooperation to arrest @DKShivakumar. The ruling govt is using investigation agencies to oppress those opposition leaders who they think are a threat to their interests,’ he tweeted.
Former Congress CM Siddaramaiah said Opposition leaders were being targeted each & every day with the BJP using central govt agencies. “It is just an attempt to divert the attention from structural failures of @BJP4India govt & also to prevent the voices of dissent,”he tweeted. He said Shivakumar is a victim of vindictive politics and he will come out clean.
The IT department had raided Shivakumar in August 2017, among the other places, at Eagleton Golf Resort on the outskirts of Bengaluru where he had hosted a group of Congress MLAs from Gujarat to secure them from any poaching attempts during the Rajya Sabha polls in which Political Secretary to AICC president Ahmed Patel was a candidate.
