BENGALURU: Barely 48 hours after she assumed office, Bengaluru deputy mayor Ramila Umashankar, 44, passed away minutes past Friday midnight. She is survived by her husband Umashankar, a former corporator, son Varun and daughter Bhoomika. The corporator’s family said she died of a heart attack.
A first-time corporator who won Kaveripura ward on a JD(S) ticket, Ramila took charge as deputy mayor on October 3 after being elected to the post in a chaotic poll on September 28.
Family members said she complained of severe chest pain around midnight, and began throwing up. She was rushed to Chord Road Hospital in Basaveshwaranagar where she was brought dead.
The JD(S) has twin tasks now: Find a candidate for deputy mayor, and field a nominee for Kaveripura ward bypoll expected in a few months.
